March 2014 Article

Cibolo Lodge held its regular meeting for March on the 6th at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City. Members enjoyed sandwiches and desserts, prior to the meeting.

Members unanimously accepted the transfer of Sigfrid Swenson to Cibolo Lodge. We look forward to having Brother Swenson join the year’s activities. His daughter, Kathryn Schmokel, was awarded her 60-year pin in March. We are lucky to have this strong Hermann Sons family at Cibolo Lodge.

Agent Tina Ynfante reported changes to Summer Camp. There will be a short week for those campers not wishing to stay an entire week. Online registration will also be available for camp, a most welcomed change. She reminded us that dance recitals will take place over the next few months and anyone wishing to dance in the fall who doesn’t already have a policy in place, should be sure to start that process as soon as possible.

Cheer committee, Dorothy Schneider, reported that she visited with Edna Rauch. At 98, Sister Rauch is the lodge’s oldest member. She read a Thank you card from the family of Lucille Wohlfahrt for the donation to the Scholarship Fund.

Members voted to hold a rummage sale for this year’s Matching Funds project. The chosen beneficiary, pending approval, will be the “Ring the Schoolhouse Bell” project. In 1877, the German community around Randolph AFB established its first school, Lower Valley School, an eventual two-room school house. In 1966, Mr. and Mrs. Watts, teachers at Lower Valley School for 25 years, purchased the school and lived there until their deaths. The heirs donated the schoolhouse to Northeast Lakeview College and it was relocated there in 2008. The school building will be restored as a public museum and will serve elementary children as a field-trip destination. Cibolo Lodge is proud to support this project as many lodge members either attended the school or were students of Mr. and Mrs. Watts over the course of their careers.

A March birthday was celebrated by Dorothy Schneider and an anniversary celebrated by President Sherry Rakowitz and her husband Jerry. This is their 39th anniversary!

Attendance prizes winners were Tina Ynfante, Dawn Bierstedt and Sarah Shepherd. The special prize drawing winner was Rhianna Jett who was not present to claim her prize.

Please plan to join us for our next meeting, Thursday, April 3rd. This meeting will feature an Easter bonnet contest, so be sure to wear your finest.
