December 2017 Article

Welcome to Cibolo Lodge’s Christmas Party News! We held our annual Christmas Party on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Bexar Social Club. Our festivities began with the dancers showing everyone what they have been learning in dance class. They did a fantastic job on all of their routines and enjoyed drinks and cookies after their performances.

President John Gray introduced and welcomed Suzanne Hildebrand, Member of the Board of Directors, from the Home Office. Ms. Hildebrand provided us with Home Office news and led us in a moment of silence for the lives lost in the Sutherland Springs Church shooting. Ms. Hildebrand also presented Bernice Albert with her 60 year membership pin. President Gray awarded Junior members that attended regular meetings throughout the year with money they earned for each meeting attended.

The Humanitarian of the Year Award was given out to Katherine Campos and, her son, Javion Campos. Katherine and Javion set up a food pantry in front of their home in Cibolo, and stocked it monthly to provide free, non perishable food items for neighbors in need of help. They had a no questions asked, policy. Her neighbors, and others from the community, got on board to donate food and other items to help those in need.

This past September we held a rummage sale for our matching funds project, which the Home Office matches up to the first $500 raised. This year’s recipient was the Clemens 4H Club. Clemens 4H helped with advertising, donations, and also participated at the sale to help raise $1,400. Judi Kosub with Clemens 4-H Club was present was to receive two checks, totaling $1, 900, as our matching funds recipient this year.

There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than with a song. Leslie Swank sang Oh Holy Night for us, and boy does she have a wonderful voice! There is an open invitation for her to sing at any meeting or function we have!

Santa time! The arrival of Jolly Old St. Nick was welcomed by the 80 plus children in attendance! They all lined up to tell Santa their wishes for this year. Of course, all of the Hermann Sons kids made the Nice List, so each received a gift from Santa and his Elf in Training, Dawn Bierstedt. Everyone who wanted, had their picture taken with Santa and had a great time. To view available pictures, “like” and view our Facebook page.

Each year we hold a 50/50 raffle, where 50% of money raised goes to our scholarship fund and the other 50% is awarded to the winning raffle ticket holder. This year we raised over $400 with half of that going to our lucky raffle winner, Cory Rakowitz. For those that didn’t win the 50/50 drawing, we drew tickets for other raffle prizes. This year’s prizes included food baskets, ice cream makers, gift cards to Lowes, HEB, Chick-fil-a, and poinsettias to name a few. Make sure to get your tickets next year for a chance to win!

The evening was rounded out with music provided from our DJ, Dana Whermann, who played great music that all enjoyed. There was plenty of dancing and singing along to favorite tunes.

The food from Next Door Catering was superb! Next Door Catering provided delicious bacon wrapped chicken, green beans, potatoes, a roll, and salad. As usual everything tasted spectacular! Guests brought in desserts for all to share.

I want to take this time to thank everyone who made this Christmas Party such a wonderful event from Bexar Social Club and their staff, to all the officers and members that put this event together. Everyone remarked they had a wonderful time and can’t wait until next year when we do it again.

Our January meeting will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City on January 4, 2018. Meetings are held every first Thursday of the month. As a side note for those with questions, although the meeting is held in the church conference room, this is not a church service. All ages are welcome to attend meetings, and anyone can bring guests. We understand that kids will be kids, and encourage their attendance. Our Junior members may bring electronic devices, coloring sheets, small toys, etc. to help keep them entertained if desired. January’s main dish will be tamales. Those attending are encouraged to bring a side dish or dessert to share. A winner will be selected for best side dish and best dessert.

Hans Boas, Linguistic Professor at UT Austin, has scheduled his Graduate Student, Alexander Lorenz, to come in his place at our February meeting (Thursday, February 1, 2018). Alexander Lorenz will speak at Christ the King Lutheran Church on February, 1st at 7 PM. Alexander is a representative of the Texas German Dialect Project (TGDP), housed in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. His talk will focus on the main goals of the TGDP, which include the preservation of the Texas German dialect as it reflects the rich cultural and linguistic traditions of its residents. In addition to his talk, Alexander is looking for Texas German speakers in the area that are willing to be interviewed by him in the near future. You can access the project’s website at www.tgdp.org and contact Alexander at (662) 588-9669.

On behalf of Cibolo Lodge #147, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! We look forward to seeing you at our January meeting!
