October 2018 Article

Dressed up to trick or treat they came into the building. It was a typical early October evening in Texas with the temperatures in the 80’s and humidity at nearly 100%. They came in various shapes and sizes. Cats wearing pumpkin shirts, pink unicorns, world renown soccer players, US Olympic qualifying volleyball players and even Mal from the Descendants came. Then more arrived, world renown painter Bob Ross and his happy little tree came, a German Halloween lady stopped by to see what was going on. Then the Crazy cat lady entered followed by the hunter and his trophy. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!! Oh its the regular October meeting for Cibolo lodge and its our spooktakular costume contest meeting. Phewww I was kinda worried for a minute there!

Nifty things to report in that our rummage sale, that we had to move to September 22, was a success despite the weather. We raised $600 for SJRC (St Jude Ranch for Children) who is our matching funds recipient this year. Several members from SJRC came out and assisted us and were fantastic with sorting out the clothes and displaying the items up for sale. We really could not have done as well as we did without them. Thank you all for helping!

September 2018 Article

Happy Fall Y’all! Our September 6th meeting started with guest speaker Sondra Ajasin with TruLight127 Ministries. TruLight127 gets its name from James 1:27 which reminds us to look after orphans and widows. Sondra founded TruLight three years ago when God let her know she needed to do more for foster children. She had already worked with Child Protective Services for awhile and a private agency before forming TruLight127 which began in June of 2015. They initially began as support services to families CPS was putting kids with, provided cribs, car seats, diapers, wipes, clothes etc. as the kids arrive in the homes with nothing except the clothes on their backs. In December 2015 they received their license from the State to be able to license foster families. In June of 2016 they received their contract to actually place kids in the foster homes. Their goal was to help 20 kids that first year, and they had 11 by that first August and seven months later in January 2017 they had 48 kids. At the end of 2017 they had 112 kids in care and had helped over 200.

Currently they have 149 kids in foster homes and 72 foster families. They constantly get middle of the night calls, sometimes consisting of sibling groups of 8 and 9 members. The kids have to go somewhere and so they sometimes end up going to other regions if there are no foster homes available in the area. In June they started looking for land to build homes so the kids don’t get split up. They found 10 acres in Guadalupe County and purchased the land and have already put one home on the property. SJRC, our Matching Funds recipient, who she is a licensed Foster Parent with. On December 15th TruLight127 will host a Christmas party for all of their foster families where every kid, foster or biological, will get a present. Currently there are around 300 children that will receive presents this year. They serve lunch and set up arts and craft tables and different things so the kids have fun and the parents can relax. They also make sure there are extra presents so that after the Christmas party any children that come in for foster care will not be left out. Every event they do they go all out for it and every October they have a fall festival. The kids have enough bad memories so they try to give them the best time so they remember their time fondly at TruLight127.

They also have a project called Foster of Destiny which is a six month calendar to help support some of the foster families with a different theme each month to make it fun. Its a gift to the fostering families to let them know the community thanks them for what they are doing and to give them a fun family night. The cost runs around $25-$50 a month. If anyone is interested they can contact anyone at the ministry and they will give you the ages of the members of the household and what they need or could use. Things like movie night for the family. For inquiries contact them at 210-858-9216 or email them at info@trulight127.org.

August 2018 Article

Summer greetings from Cibolo Lodge. We held our August meeting and had as our guest Cynthia Lopez, Director of Development at St Jude Ranch for Children, our Matching Funds Recipient for this year. For those of us that were not familiar with SJRC, Cindy explained that they are the ones that care for children in the Foster Care System that have been removed from their homes by the Department of Family and Protective Services. SJRC cares for the children placed with them from newborns until adulthood. The children they care for daily are from of some of the most horrific cases seen on the news. They provide care for these children 24/7/365. They care for them, feed them, clothe them, take them to and from school, help with home work, help them with extra curricular activities, nurture them and above all else help them to heal from any trauma they have experienced. They strive for the children to have as happy a childhood as possible and provide them with as much normalcy as possible. They have three campus locations, New Braunfels, San Antonio and Bulverde. In San Antonio they have a Child Placement Agency for families willing to foster any of these children or adopting any of the children. They only receive 50% of support from the state, while providing 100% care for the children and they have approximately 100 children in their care at this time.

In addition to being our matching funds recipient they will be assisting at our rummage sale on September 15 in the parking lot of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City.
